After 35 years of my existence, I finally decided to get braces despite the many warnings of how painful it can get. And honestly - it's not as bad as it seems.

Yes, there were a lot of adjustments but I was able to easily get used to it in less than a week. Plus it actually helps me start my diet and give up eating rice and so far - all is good. Its been three weeks since I got my braces on and these are the changes I need to adjust to:
  • THE PAIN. According to our doctor, some patients instantly feel pain as the braces are installed while some experience it following morning. In my case, I slowly felt the pain every hour until 2 days after. The pain wasn't like a toothache pain but just a slight pain when you try to bite something or accidentally hit your teeth with something hard.

In my case, the most painful part of getting braces is when I involuntarily clench my teeth when stressed or sleep.

  • YOUR EATING HABIT WILL CHANGE. During my first week with braces, I had to chop my food first on my plate before I eat it. I prefer eating soft food like oatmeal, congee, noodles so I didn't have to chew my food.

After two weeks, I can eat almost anything I like including nuts and meat as long as I consume it piece by piece or in bite-size portions.

  • PRONUNCIATION. I don't know if it's just me but I'm having slight difficulties in pronouncing words that start with the letter S. Although it's just a minor adjustment, it sometimes bothers me, especially when at work.
Getting Braces: Will I lose weight? One of my main reason for getting braces is to lose weight. And so far, it has helped me stop eating rice, not enjoy eating french fries, and slowly eat chips so I can chew it properly. It has been three weeks and the most painful part of getting braces has passed but I still haven't eaten rice, I got used to eating in small portions and lost 4 kilos in my first 10 days! Ill post another update regarding my braces diet after six months so you can see if I am able to stick to it and how much I have lost. How Long Do You Need to Wear Braces? My doctor said it can take 6 months to align my teeth and possibly 2 years to correct my bite. It has only been 3 weeks so I can't say much has changed but I will definitely post an update here monthly photos and the noticeable changes after 6 months. If you are curious why I got braces, this is because my 2 front teeth have shifted to the left and my lower teeth are crooked. Below are photos of my teeth before putting on braces. Installing the braces can be as fast as 45 minutes to 2 hours. In my case, it took almost 2 hours because one of my teeth's jacket fell off and my doctor had to re-attach it, my doctor performed teeth cleaning which is my first in possibly 5 years? so it's not surprising it took a while. But if there is nothing much to clean or repair in your teeth, it should only take 45 minutes or less. How much does it cost to get braces in the Philippines? The cost of getting braces depends on which dental clinic you go to. The most reputable dental clinics or those that have been in the industry for a long time can be expensive. But I am lucky because there is a doctor in my area who doesn't charge much to get braces. My doctor only charges me 5,000 pesos for installation and 1,000 pesos for the adjustments every 3 to 6 weeks. If you would also like to get braces with my doctor - please refer to this post.
