Last May, while the world is going through the COVID19 pandemic, my period finally started after 2 months of absence. Since I am a heavy bleeder, I knew that missed cycles meant heavier menstruation on my next one. So when the menstruation arrived... It took me a while (60 days to be exact) before I realize I needed to consult a doctor. And it's a good thing I did because if I lost any more blood, my doctor said I may already need blood transfusion.

My Period Didn't Stop for almost 60 Days

As a heavy bleeder, my period normally lasts for 14 days. However, I didn't have my period for 2 months so I thought when my period is still ongoing after 30 days that it's still normal. Another 30 days past and my period still hasn't stopped. Although there we're days when the menstruation was very light, there were nights when I had to get up 3x within 2 hours because my napkin got full too fast.

My family also said my lips are lighter than normal and I feel like I am too tired to do anything but just lie in bed and sleep. One day, I felt my heart skipped a beat and felt very tired after just 20 steps of walking. That's when I decided to consult an OB-gyne through an online consultation.

How to Stop Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

When I first consulted a doctor, the doctor was very concerned about my iron levels after checking my eyes. It was clear that I am already anemic due to too much blood loss so she said I should have my blood tested so she can check if I needed to be admitted as well as start taking iron supplements. And as for the bleeding, she gave me tranexamic acid that I should take 3x a day for 5 days.

Does tranexamic acid works?

Yes, it did work very well. The very first capsule I took immediately stopped my menstruation. I had a few blood drops on my pad within the 5 days I took it but nothing more than a tablespoon. But what made me worried is that what if the menstruation continues after the 5 days. However, my doctor said I should have blood checked, get an ultrasound, and transrectal first before she can help me. Since we were in the middle of a pandemic, going out of the house was not an option for me until its really an emergency so I decided to get a second opinion.

When I asked for a second opinion from another doctor, she understood my situation and told me I can postpone taking the test for 60 days and prescribed me to take a low dosage birth control pills to make sure my period stops after taking the tranexamic acid. She said I should skip taking the first set of sugar pills and start a new set of birth control pills right away. On the 5th day of my next menstruation, that's when I should take the tests.

Does Birth Control Pills make your period stop?

Yes, it also worked great for me. I took the birth control pills on the 4th day I was taking my tranexamic and on the 6th day - my period has totally stopped. I slowly regained my strength and was able to move again normally.

Unfortunately, just when I was about to start my 2nd set of birth control pills, my period started again and it got heavier day by day. So I consulted 2nd doctor again and she said we need to stop the bleeding right away because my iron levels was still low. She prescribed me to take 6 tranexamic acid a day for 1 day but the menstruation didn't stop. She then told me to take tranexamic for 2 more days with 4 birth control pills every 6 hours. The bleeding still hasn't stopped and got a bit heavier every day.

After 2 days, I decided to consult a new doctor and she said I can take tranexamic 3x a day for 5 days. After that, I can only take 1 birth control pill a day. If the bleeding got too heavy, she will need to see me in her clinic.

I got super scared of course. I prayed the rosary every day and talked to Mama Mary every night to please help me. As well as asking my guardian angel and holy spirit to please help me during this time as I am at the point of depression and too scared to face another day with my weakening condition.

But a miracle happened. My period got lighter slowly and after 10 days or so my period has completely stopped. God is soooo goood!

My 3rd doctor also prescribed me to take a new type of birth control pills that have a higher dosage. I am now at my 3rd week and everything is still okay. Hopefully, my period will be a bit normal when it comes in the following weeks. I will make sure to share my experience here.
